Improving traffic mobility and efficiency is a high priority for the City. In 2010, the City completed a traffic signal system timings update project which included reviewing and making adjustments at various signalized intersections. Since 2010, Ankeny's population has increased by more than 10,000 people, numerous schools (including two high schools) have been constructed, significant residential, commercial, industrial development and growth has occurred within the City. These factors have all contributed to changes in traffic volumes and travel patterns. In order to improve traffic mobility and efficiency, the Public Works Department is proposing to complete a comprehensive traffic signal system timings and coordination plan update project in 2017 and 2018. The project will include the existing interconnected traffic signals at approximately 46 intersections and the corresponding optimization corridors located on Ankeny's arterial street system.
The City applied for and was subsequently awarded ICAAP funding from the Iowa DOT in the amount of 80% of eligible project costs up to a maximum amount of $116,800. To facilitate using the ICAAP funding, the Iowa DOT has submitted a Federal-aid agreement which stipulates the cost sharing and eligible costs for the project. It is recommended that the Council approve the agreement at this time so the project schedule can be maintained. |
