The City of Ankeny is aware of the need to improve traffic safety and operations at the Ankeny Boulevard (U.S. Highway 69) and First Street intersection. During the past several years, there have been numerous crashes at the intersection. In addition, City growth and development has necessitated a reconfiguration of the east leg of the intersection from two left turn lanes and two through lanes to one left turn lane, two through lanes, and one right turn lane.
A traffic safety and operations study for the Ankeny Boulevard and First Street intersection was completed by Snyder & Associates in 2016, recommending the improvements mentioned above, along with lengthening the southbound to eastbound left turn lane, traffic signal modifications, and pedestrian ramp improvements. Given the crash history and traffic volumes at this intersection, the proposed project received funding assistance through the Iowa DOT's Traffic Safety Improvement Program (TSIP).
It is recommended that the execution of the Agreement for Traffic Safety Improvement Program (TSIP) Funding by and between the City of Ankeny and the Iowa DOT be authorized at this time. The total estimated cost for the project is $628,800, of which $500,000 is being funded through the Iowa DOT's TSIP. |
