NW State Street terminates at a tee intersection from the south with NW 36th Street today. The street section to the south of NW 36th Street was improved to a 4-lane urban section in 2007. Since that time, the northwest sections of the city have grown dramatically, especially in the area near this tee intersection. All indications are that this strong growth pattern will continue in the near term and future.
The 2010 Comprehensive Plan included a concept for the extension of NW State Street running north and west of its current terminus following a reverse-curve alignment so that it connects with NW Irvinedale Drive. This alignment will promote the proper traffic patterns for the arterial street system in the northwest quadrant of Ankeny.
Staff included this future section of NW State Street within the current CIP with construction anticipated to be needed in 2024 and 2025. Given the major scope of this project and the necessary curvilinear alignment, staff had a study completed to determine the best corridor for the street between NW 36th Street and NW Irvinedale Drive. HDR was retained to complete this study.
The results of the study recommended two possible alignments. Staff reviewed these two options and determined the best routing to follow an angled path as shown on the attachment.
Since staff undertook this study, a number of developers have inquired about the possible routing of NW State Street as they own or have interests in the property that this future street will traverse. With Council's filing of the study document, staff will be in a position to share the study with the public. Given the recent interest shown in the alignment, staff anticipates that the need for the NW State Street project may need to be advanced to an earlier year in the CIP. |
