The NW Irvinedale Drive and NW 5th Street Intersection Improvements project includes the removal and replacement of PCC street pavement, sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, and traffic signals generally located at the intersection of NW Irvinedale Drive and NW 5th Street in the City of Ankeny.
The construction improvements include approximately 9,700 SY of PCC street pavement, 330 LF of sanitary sewer, 1,680 LF of water main, 2,025 LF of storm sewer, Class 10 excavation, subgrade preparation, modified subbase, subdrain, traffic signal removal and replacement, and removal and replacement of driveways and sidewalks. Other associated improvements include traffic control, erosion control, temporary driveways, temporary surface restoration, and miscellaneous associated work necessary to complete the project.
The bid opening for the project was held on Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Six (6) bids were received as follows:
1. Concrete Technologies, Inc. $2,448,964.42
2. Con-Struct, Inc. $2,474,482.32
3. Sternquist Construction $2,540,694.01
4. Manatt's, Inc. $2,603,332.27
5. Halbrook Excavating $2,762,142.00
6. Hawkeye Paving Corporation $2,835,547.15
The engineer's estimate for the project was $2,852,312.00. The bids ranged from approximately 14% below to 1% below the engineer's estimate. Public Works staff reviewed the bid results internally and with the consulting engineering firm who designed the project. Concrete Technologies, Inc. has previously completed projects of similar nature for the City, including the NE 36th Street Reconstruction project in 2017. They have the capacity and the technical experience to undertake this project. It is recommended that the project be awarded to Concrete Technologies, Inc. of Grimes, Iowa.
Pending project approval and award by the City Council, the contractor shall fully complete Stage 1 of the project within forty (40) working days and shall fully complete the overall project within one hundred fifty (150) working days. Stage 2 work that affects traffic on NW Irvinedale Drive shall begin no earlier than June 4, 2018. The Notice to Proceed is expected to be issued in late March 2018. An enhancement of payment in the amount of Forty Thousand Dollars ($40,000.00) will be issued to the Contractor if full completion of the overall project is achieved on or before Sunday, September 30, 2018.
