Jurisdiction Agreement - Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway

Iowa Department of Transportation

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

On March 2, 2015 the Ankeny City Council endorsed the designation of the Jefferson Highway Heritage Byway.  Generally, U.S. Highway 69 was designated as the Jefferson Byway on the state level at that time.  The Iowa DOT is now in a position to have the specialty signs showing the designation installed along the route.  Within Ankeny, this will include Ankeny Boulevard and a side route (known as the Cambridge Loop) that will run along NE Delaware Avenue and NE 18th Street.  The official route also includes running through Uptown Ankeny.  Later this year, the Iowa DOT will install the signs along the Byway.  In the future, the Iowa DOT will maintain and replace the Byway signs as needed along their highways.  The signs that will be installed on Ankeny streets (NE Delaware Ave., NE 18th St., West First St., SW Cherry St., SW Ordnance Rd.) will be the responsibility of the City of Ankeny to maintain and replace as needed.  The Iowa DOT will provide the sign materials to public works for this.  It is estimated that there will be no more than ten signs for which Ankeny will be responsible for future replacements.  This Jurisdiction Agreement establishes Ankeny's responsibility to maintain the signs in the future, and staff recommends approval of the said agreement.

FISCAL IMPACT: Yes
Future replacements of the signs, when they become deteriorated or are missing, will be completed by Public Works.  The sign materials will be provided to the City by the Iowa DOT.
