SUBJECT:
Consider motion to receive and file the City of Ankeny's Bicycle Tourism Strategy dated May 2019.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The City recently completed a bicycle tourism and economic development strategy that identifies opportunities to enhance the amenities along Ankeny's network of trails.  This strategy recommends actionable steps the City should consider to increase the number of visitors to Ankeny and improve the overall trail experience for residents.  These opportunities include:

  • Ankeny Trail Awareness
  • Install Branded Trail Elements
  • Accessibility & Connectivity Projects
  • AMP as Central Trailhead
  • Activate Uptown Public Space
  • High Trestle Trail Anchor Feature
  • Promote Trail-Oriented Development
  • Commercial Connections
  • Activate Parks & Art Stops
  • Ankeny Bicycle Program
  • Protect the Trail Experience
FISCAL IMPACT: No
There is no fiscal impact associated with the completion of the report; however, there will be a fiscal impact if the Council approves implementing recommendations in the plan.
CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDATIONS:
To receive and place on file.  Projects will be brought forward for Council approval in the future.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL/COMMISSION/BOARD ACTION(S):
The Council approved the funding and contract with the consultant, Friction Shift Project.  The consultant presented an update to the Council, and the City Manager has provided the Council with a copy of the final report.
PUBLIC OUTREACH EFFORTS:
The consultant completed 15 group or one-on-one interviews, surveyed 195 trail users, and hosted a community workshop where over 30 residents participated.
