Two street sections are recommended for speed limit changes with the proposed Ordinance. The first is NW Irvinedale Drive, north of NW 18th Street. The character of NW Irvinedale Drive between NW 18th Street and NW 54th Street is changing, from a two-lane rural roadway to a city arterial with left-turn lanes serving residential and commercial developments. As the homes on each side of the street are built and occupied, and commercial areas become active, lower speed limits will be appropriate. The proposed change will also lower the posted speed limit on approach to the High Trestle Trail crossing of NW Irvinedale Drive.
Pending approval of the proposed Ordinance, it is recommended that Section 63.05, paragraph "4. Irvinedale Drive", be revised to reflect the above change. Specifically, a 45 mph posted speed limit will be established from a point 2,450 feet north of NW 36th Street to NW Reinhart Drive. The 35 mph posted speed limit will be established from NW Reinhart Drive to SW 3rd Street Place.
The second street section recommended for speed limit change is on NW 36th Street, west of the intersection with N Ankeny Blvd/ US 69. The majority of NW/ NE 36th Street is posted with 35 mph limit, for nearly four miles across the City. The exception is a 1,850-foot section posted at 45 mph between NW Ash Drive and N Ankeny Boulevard. With increased development of the commercially-zoned area, additional through-traffic and turning traffic are expected, and standardizing the speed limit through the corridor is desirable.
Pending approval of the proposed Ordinance, it is recommended that Section 63.05, paragraph "7. North 36th Street", be revised to reflect the above change. Specifically, a 35 mph posted speed limit will be established on North 36th Street from 1,850 feet east of NW Irvinedale Drive to 1,250 feet west of the east corporate limit (Polk County NE 29th Street). |
