SUBJECT: |
Consider motion to adopt RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Ankeny, Iowa, approving a public art installation at the Ankeny Art Center. |
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: |
The Ankeny Art Center has commissioned artist Pam Dennis to design, construct, and install a public art piece titled Community Treescape at the Ankeny Art Center. The sculpture will be a woven metal tree tied to a metal grid that is 8' x 8'. The tree trunk will be woven from steel strapping, and the leaves of the tree will consist of stamped clay. Students from a local elementary school, community members, and businesses will be involved with stamping the leaves. The Cultural Arts Board has approved the Ankeny Art Center's application for public art and is recommending City Council's approval of this project. City Council's approval is required because the sculpture will be installed on City owned property, leased by the Ankeny Art Center. It is expected this project will be installed in 2021, but creating the leaves will begin this summer. |
FISCAL IMPACT:
No |
The Ankeny Friends of the Arts is planning to privately fund-raise to cover 100% of the costs of this project. This organization will own the sculpture and will assume all ongoing maintenance. If the Art Center ever relocates they will have the option to take the sculpture with them or deed it to the City, if the City wishes to accept the sculpture. |
