The action before the Council is the adoption of a Resolution accepting a proposal from JC Construction, Inc. for the School Walkability Improvements.
The School Walkability Improvements will replace or construct fourteen (14) pedestrian ramps at crosswalks serving five elementary schools within the City of Ankeny. The schools are East Elementary, Northwest Elementary, Rock Creek Elementary, St. Luke Catholic, and Westwood Elementary.
The construction improvements include approximately 30 SY of 4” thick sidewalk, 230 SY of 5” thick sidewalk and 145 SY of 6” thick sidewalk, 190 SY of 8” or 9” full depth Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) patches, 45 LF of 8” or 9” PCC curb and gutter, and 210 SF of detectable warnings. Other associated tasks include sidewalk and curb and gutter removals, temporary traffic control, erosion control with temporary seeding, mobilization, restoration and miscellaneous associated work necessary to complete the project.
An invitation to submit a proposal went out to fifteen (15) area construction firms. Three (3) proposals were received by 10:30 am on March 21, 2023:
JC Construction, Inc. $130,702.00
Howrey Construction, Inc. $142,655.00
Concrete Connection, LLC $141,376.00
The Engineer's Estimate was $106,740.00, and the bids ranged from 22% to 34% higher than the estimate. JC Construction, Inc. has completed similar work for other area agencies, and has the expertise to successfully complete this project. The Public Works Department recommends awarding the School Walkability Improvements to JC Construction, Inc.
Pending Council approval, the contractor will begin work no sooner than June 5, 2023 and complete the project by July 31, 2023. |
